I can understand this phase of yours when your concept is not clear about Subdomains, Addons, and Parked domains because at the time of beginning in the blogging field, my concept was also not clear and I always thought that subdomains and Addon domains were the same. But, now I’m playing with these domains and using them every day for different purposes. So, I’ve figured out the differences between all these domains and am very excited to share them with you all so you can also clarify your concept about these domains.

Difference Between Subdomain, Addon & Parked Domain

Difference between subdomain addon and parked domain

Here I’ve particularly defined each of these domains and I hope that will help you to understand the concept.

Subdomain

Guys, you would see this type of domain on many websites such as downloads.cnet.com or images.google.com. It means, replacing of www portion with any name that you wanna make a subdomain of your main domain such as subdomain.maildomain.com. However, you can particularly publish the unique content on the subdomain.

If you use any CMS like WordPress, you can install it on a subdomain and run it as a completely different website but the domain name will be the main domain of your hosting package with the prefix added at the place of www.

So, in one line, A subdomain is a second website with its own unique content, but there is no new domain name or you don’t need to buy another domain for this.

Addon Domain

Have you ever wanted to add your other website to your existing Linux hosting package package? So, under the Addon domains section of your cPanel, you can add your other website with its unique content.

So, the Addon domain is your other website with its own unique content and the domain is also different from the main domain or you must have a domain (like www.otherdomain.com) to be added to the Addon domain.

It means, if you wanna host www.otherdomain.com with your running hosting package, this is the solution. So, you can add your other domain in Addon Domains section and it will start hosting on the same package without having to do anything else. Read here, how to add addon domian in cPanel.

Parked Domain

You might find some similarities between Subdomain and Addon domain but Parked domain is completely different from both of them. In fact, a parked domain is not a unique website or there is no unique content. So, what is a parked domain? It is actually the masked forward to the primary domain name of your cPanel account, much like a website alias.

Before you get confused, let me tell you some of the essential uses of Parked domain:

  • You need a place to park a domain for which you do not have a website, it is the solution.
  • If you have mistakenly registered common misspellings of your domain, you can park them to your main domain.

Still, one thing I again wanna tell you is that don’t be confused between subdomain and addon domain, just remember that a subdomain is a website with unique content but there is no new domain, and addon domain is a website with unique content with another registered domain. So, after reading the above information, I’m sure that your misconceptions about subdomain, addon, and parked domain will go out of your mind.
